About Julia Ahlbom

My name is Julia Ahlbom and I have helped hundreds of people to change unhelpful patterns and find a way to a life that gives them greater joy. I have a master’s degree in psychology, I’m a licensed psychologist and have nearly 20 years’ experience as a psychologist, teacher and supervisor. Feel free to contact me if you want me to help you too.

Why is life so hard for me? Why does it seem much easier to others?

Many who seek my help find that they run into the same problems over and over again. They are very resourceful and have so much will and motivation to move on. But they don’t see how. Therefore, my approach is often – together with you – to examine what unconscious strategies and emotions may be limiting you. By making the basic patterns conscious in this way, it is also possible to change them once and for all. For good reasons, we cannot change others, or influence what injustices life can bring. But the way we handle ourselves when we meet challenges or are affected by events and people around us, is in our power to change.

Learn more about me and my approach to the psychological and emotional development work below.

My approach: An informal tone

I emphasize a clear, distinct and informal tone of communication. I say what I do and do what I say because it creates security . To make our conversations as helpful as possible, I often spend some time at the end evaluating what is and isn’t working for you.

You are always welcome to contact me if you want to know more. In this way, you can also better assess whether a course with me matches your needs.

My focus: The life you want

Together with you, I am concerned with finding out what it takes for you to live the life you want. My experience is that very few people are fully aware of what exactly they are looking for and what limits them. Therefore, it is also very difficult to set your own goals and find the way to get there.

I start of with the assumption that there is often a need to handle some things different from the way you usually do, if you are to change what is holding you back from being able to live a more satisfying life.

My foundation: Our relationship

As a psychologist, I have worked with both children, young people, adults, parents, couples and groups. Regardless of who is sitting in front of me, I see the relationship between you and me as a necessary part of what we have to do together. In this way, our cooperation is crucial for the success of your development work.

My method: I work eclectically

I primarily practice within the ISTDP method, which is part of the psychodynamic direction. It is a therapeutic approach which helps to identify the inner emotional conflicts that underlie the psychological symptoms you are experiencing. The method involves making unconscious strategies conscious and processing emotions. It is suitable for those who want to create profound changes in a short time.

Depending on your individual needs and the problem you come with, I also work with other methods. For you, it really just means that I always tailor the therapy to your needs, and that I always use an approach that has a proven effect in relation to the problems you want to solve.

My experience: Several different roles

Since 2007, I have worked with psychology in several different ways: among other things, under municipal auspices, as self-employed, in collaboration with other self-employed people, as a teacher at the University of Copenhagen and with management tasks regarding the psychological working environment. I have also supervised both other professional groups and psychologists.

My education: MSc (Psych.) from 2007

I studied my bachelor’s at the University of East London and got my Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Copenhagen in 2007. I was authorised by the Ministry of Social Affairs in 2011. Since my internship in 2006, I have participated in a lot of short courses and received supervision and personal therapy on an ongoing basis. I have also taken a 3-year further training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) and started a training in emotion-focused couple therapy (EFT) with the internationally recognized psychologist and relationship expert Jette Simon .

In order to supplement with a more holistic understanding of the human being as a complex interplay between body and psyche, I am currently undertaking a body-oriented training as a TRE trainer. TRE stands for “Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises“. They are exercises that help the body get rid of tension and stress, which would otherwise accumulate in the body and cause symptoms.

My background: My base is in Vanløse

I was born in Sweden in 1974, but came to Denmark in 1995. Today I live in Vanløse with my family, and have also set up my small informal clinic in an independent section of our private home. I can offer cooperation in Danish, Swedish and English.
