Supervision – strengthen yourself as a professional

Supervision is a good way in which you, as a professional, are supported in developing yourself and your working life, so that you can contribute better professionally and increase your own well-being. The focus is, among other things, on how you can tackle adversity, accept mistakes and handle yourself in interaction with your clients, colleagues and managers.

With supervision, you as a professional can get:

  • Strengthened cooperation from your team at work
  • An extra set of professional eyes on specific cases that challenge you
  • Greater awareness of your action patterns as a professional - including those that limit you
  • Help to handle errors more appropriately - both your own and others’
  • Better ability to communicate clearly and set clear boundaries
  • Greater awareness of your own values, actions and behavior patterns

The supervision supports you in seeing the whole

Your specific case

Supervision often starts with a complicated case that you would like to have an extra set of professional eyes on. Together, we look at how you as an individual or team can carry out the task and support your client in the best possible way.

You as a professional

In the supervision, we also look at why exactly this case is so difficult for you. In order to function well in a team or help other people to thrive, it is important that you are fully aware of what you yourself bring into the relationship.

Your surroundings

An important element in supervision is also the circumstances under which you work. Is there something in your work culture or processes that has particular significance for how you act – and how does it affect your task resolution?

Supervision processes are never alike

Sometimes supervision is given to only one person. Other times there are two or more of you in a group.

Sometimes a single session on a specific professional issue provides enough inspiration to move forward. Other times we run longer processes where you also get the opportunity to work on yourself as an individual.

If required, I’ll come to your workplace, or we hold the sessions in my practice.

Either way, I always organise the supervision process precisely according to your needs – always taking your situation into consideration.

At the start

We will have probably already talked on the phone before we meet for the first time. To ensure that the supervision is organised according to both yours and the workplace’s needs, we always start by clarifying the most important issues in the process.

The process

Based on the framework we have determined together, we examine the issues in more detail. The focus is on how you handle yourself in specific situations and how you become stronger in your task solving. For longer courses, we typically hold one session per month.

Continuous development

The longer the supervision process, the more you strengthen your own professionalism. Supervision is not necessarily something you stop with, just like psychotherapy. Many instead make it part of their regular practice, and continue to receive supervision going forward.

Common challenges that supervision can help you solve are …

Most people who work with others need to reflect on how they can best enter into the relationship with their clients. In order to help others in the best way possible, one must not only stand strong in one’s professionalism, but also understand how one influences the relationship on a more personal level.

In the workplace, you also stand stronger as a team if you understand what each of you brings to the group and what this means for specific tasks.

Regardless of whether supervision is used as an individual or a group, it typically contributes to solving some of these challenges:

  • I often feel tired and depressed when I go home from work
  • I am unsure if I am doing the right thing and am afraid of making mistakes
  • I would like to be better at motivating my clients to develop
  • I have one or more clients that I don’t know how to handle
  • I would like to be more aware of what happens in me when I help others
  • I become self-critical when I make a mistake – or judgmental when someone else does
  • I take my clients’ problems on and it affects me negatively
  • I blame myself that my clients don’t progress faster

Below you can learn more about some of the challenges I can help you and your team deal with. But everyone comes with a unique set of circumstances and I welcome getting to know you and providing you with exactly what you need from supervision.

Stand stronger in the specific case and become aware of your own patterns

Supervision of psychologists

Supervision by psychologists is often based on a specific case. A client who does not cooperate or who for other reasons does not develop positively. The defiant client. The helpless client. The passive client. Or maybe a bug that keeps haunting you. It can give rise to strong feelings of not being good enough, to self-criticism, frustration and/or paralysis.

In supervision, we work with your responsibility as a psychologist. You get an extra set of professional eyes on the client’s unconscious patterns and inputs on how you can untangle them. But also some strategies for how you avoid taking too much responsibility for what the client brings. When you strengthen your ability to distinguish between your own role and the other’s contribution, you can more easily live with mistakes and accept that not all processes are perfect.

The course also strengthens your sense of self, so that you stand stronger in the relationship with your client going forward.

The focus of the supervision is:

  • Your responsibility as a psychologist
  • Your ability to accept mistakes
  • How you act in the interaction with your clients/colleagues
  • How you relate to yourself when you work

Strengthen the relationship with your colleagues and stand stronger in your own professionalism

Supervision of those who work in a care profession

This course is for anyone who work with people. You could be a pedagogue, teacher, health nurse, nurse or SOSU, and you may be employed in a kindergarten, in a care home or a residence for vulnerable young people. The important thing is that you want to strengthen your professionalism, and to experience yourself as part of a community that can do more than each of you alone.

The supervision typically contributes to solving how the staff at your workplace handle a single, yet complicated, case, for example an angry nursing home resident or a particularly vulnerable teenager. You also get a new look at how you can best support the person in question. You’ll develop a new awareness of how you as colleagues can complement each other in the workplace in relation to the individual.

In the longer supervision sessions, we work more in-depth to develop the psychological security between you within the staff group, so that you can more easily articulate and solve any problems – especially when they concern yourselves and your collaboration. The focus is to create a culture where you are not so afraid of making mistakes, because you have a mutual understanding that mistakes are inevitable – and if you manage to be caring towards each other – this is where you can all learn and grow.

Through the supervision, you will experience that you become more united as colleagues, and that a kind of common guild of care for each other emerges. Each of you will be able to express yourself more freely and stand much stronger in your own professionalism – and thus also be able to support the people you are there for much better.

The focus of the supervision is:

  • To strengthen the collegial community at your workplace
  • To ensure that you use each other as best as possible in the collaboration on the individual
  • That you accept mistakes as a condition and are comfortable talking about them so you can learn from them together
  • That each of you stands stronger in your own professionalism

Become more aware and confident in your professionalism as a psychologist

Supervision of new graduates

As a newly qualified psychologist, you must have a continuous course of 40 hours with the same supervisor to obtain your authorization. It is of course a requirement – but also a golden opportunity to further your education in practice. The supervision always starts from the exact challenges you have, and thus makes you more aware and confident in your approach to your clients – regardless of where you are employed.

The focus can be, for example:

  • What the client’s dynamics are and how you can handle them better, e.g. by strengthening the client’s emotional commitment
  • What are your own unconscious patterns of action so that you can deal with them without them weakening your professionalism
  • How you develop the relationship between you and your client, so that you do not take on too much responsibility and do the work that the client has to do himself

With the authorisation comes completely new opportunities for your carer as a psychologist. But many – myself included – also choose to receive supervision afterwards, as the biggest gain is, in reality, on a personal level.

The focus of the supervision is:

  • How you solve concrete challenges in your work
  • How you unconsciously react to your clients
  • How to take care of yourself and avoid taking too much responsibility for your clients’ choices

Strengthen your integrity as a leader so that your employees follow you

Become the leader you want to be

Supervision of managers is effective, regardless of the level at which you manage – whether you are a department manager, middle manager, team leader or manager in a smaller institution.

The supervision typically focuses on the relational challenges you encounter in your leadership. For example:

  • How do I handle conflicts among my employees?
  • How do I strengthen collaboration in my management team?
  • How do I handle an informal leader in my team?
  • How do I rein in my temper as a leader?
  • How do I achieve greater impact as a leader?
  • How do I take care of myself and prioritise my efforts?

Supervision can also be relevant for you who are a leader in an organisation in acute crisis, or who have to bring about changes in the organisation that are unpopular among your employees. Here, under extraordinary pressure, you have to handle both an extremely complicated task and the frustrations the process causes among the employees.

Through the supervision, you get strategies for how you handle yourself as a leader. You become aware of how you contribute to creating a better working environment for your employees, including how you maintain an overview and de-escalate conflicts – regardless of whether you yourself are a party to them or not.

The more clear you become in your leadership, the more likely your employees are to follow you in the direction that you see as most productive for the task that you are responsible for.

The focus of the supervision is:

  • How you handle relational challenges in your leadership
  • How you handle yourself as a manager and contribute to creating a good working environment
  • How you maintain an overview and reduce conflicts
